_tightly wound takes a rare library of spring reverb noises and weaves them into a truly unique, hybrid instrument + transition FX generator for Ableton.

Braeden “Pockets” Rangno has teamed up with us once again for another cheeky creation. Pockets asked what we could do with a library of samples he created while misusing and experimenting with his collection of spring reverb boxes. We said, “We have no idea, but we’ll reverberate on it for while and see.” He said, “cool.” So here we are.

We wanted to design something that can easily generate risers, builds, swooshes, transitions and abstract bass, keys, and percussion sounds.

We used over 2 continuous minutes of the magically magnetic moments he captured to create a hybrid instrument and sound design device like no other. Think 70s swagger meets 21st century sound designer bro. At the heart of this, we have Ableton’s Vector Grain, a device that’s also heavily inspired by magnetics. Vector Grain transforms the spring reverb multisample source file into a fully re-pitched, playable, and designable noise generator that can blur the line between instrument and effect.

Simply use MIDI notes to trigger pitched sound sources, and use the 16 macro controls to shape and design your sound and automate in your timeline. To make it even easier, we included 64 sound presets and 16 starter Ableton Clip (.ALC) MIDI sequences for you to drop in and use anywhere you like. You’ll be up and designing in no time.

• Minimum Requirements: Ableton 11.3.x Standard/Suite.

• 1 Ableton Live 11.3.x Session

• 1 Ableton Live Instrument/transition + FX generator with 64 sound presets.

• 16 starter MIDI effects sequences as drag and drop Ableton Clips (.ALC).

• Real-time macro controls for automating.

• 1 multisample spring reverb audio source. (37MB)

• 96k/24bit .wav source.

• 100% Royalty-Free.

• Designed in Vancouver, Canada by Braeden “Pockets” Rangno & Subsocial Studios.

_broken hammers gives you the lowest-fi piano instrument and the sounds of pure piano destruction for Ableton Live.

We sampled an upright piano the very same day it was going to the garbage dump. The samples we captured were the last notes it ever played. We thought it was fitting to record all 88 keys with contact microphones. These types of microphones are inherently lo-fi, and capture a very dry and focused "vibrating" sound, from every thump, to every rattle. No keys were in good shape, and some keys were really rough sounding, but we embraced the deterioration. Let's just say, it's really, really charming sounding. When it came to tuning, we attempted to have each note as tuned as it could be before recording, but the overtones and shifting colours from key to key are still quite unpredictable.

We also destroyed the piano with a sledgehammer, hand saw, drill, pick axe, and various other tools of destruction. It was a lot of fun, and for a great cause. These 101 different sounds of piano annihilation are seriously unique.

Bringing the piano notes into Ableton was next, and we came up with an instrument with a lot of range when it comes to lo-fi vibes. We think you'll enjoy using it. Let's just say that MIDI velocity works wonders.

Bringing the 101 smash sounds into another sampler instrument was simple enough, but we also built a generative/random, multi-layered smash designer instrument as well. Use it at your own risk!

And this is a piano, uh, they can't touch.

Break it down.

Thank you to Mehul for the vocals on the sound demo!
