_lab grown drums for Ableton




    _lab grown means mutated kick and snare design for Ableton. If you're tired of injecting the same tired, generic drums samples from 2012 into your song's DNA, then this is for you. What's the formula? We sampled multiple acoustic kicks, toms, snares, paint cans, plastic bowls, metal ting-tings, cardboard boxes, paper, and glasses (+ a whole lot of other things we can remember). We filled all these things with random objects sometimes, and then hit them with sticks, mallets, brushes, shoes, hands, and whatever else was laying around the lab. We also just straight-up dropped things from a height in a warehouse space and sampled away. We tried to keep our recording chains for capture pretty different, so we changed things up a lot as we sampled different things. Ribbons, condensers, tube mics, vintage mic preamps, LA-2As, 1176s, Pultec, MAAG, and API EQs were all harmed in the making of this release. We figured we'd do some more mutating, so we processed all of the samples and added blend-able FX layers using many different outboard and pedal effects boxes. Our software plug-ins were lonely, but the effects we captured were alive! The 3 Ableton rack instruments give you a kick, snare, and ambient/room snare. Turn the macro knobs and choose your favourite samples. Blend all the out-of-the-box layers and FX for each sound together to create the perfect Frankenstein one-shot drum sample. These racks are the perfect antidote for gentrified drum tracks. New drum sounds are always the best medicine. • 655 one-shot drum samples.     _reel flamingos SSS074




      _reel flamingos means flamenco-inspired guitar loops captured on a mediocre analog tape machine, with an ambient Ableton instrument that sets a big mood. Watch a walkthrough of what's inside here: https://youtu.be/L6LNgj8JmYY We're calling it flamingos because it's not really flamenco. It's flamenco for tourists of the genre, but super useful for more "genreless" productions. When we say mediocre, we mean it in the best way possible. The guitar is new, and totally hand-made in Mexico, but a 1/4" Fostex 8-track (yes, 1/4" 8-track) machine in questionable condition was used to impart a very overblown vintage tape aesthetic to the samples. We pushed the guitar really hard to tape with no noise reduction options, but hiss, and warm rippling saturation was just the beginning. We recorded the guitar in stereo, but on the outside tracks, 1+8 to degrade the sound and stereo phase even further in just the right way. On the way to tape, we sauced things up properly, and used vintage Beyerdynamic M160 ribbon mics, Neve preamps, and Pultec EQs in our marinade. There's also a bonus Ableton instrument that plays the most exquisitely cinematic and ambient chorded tones and textures. Flamenco feels forever. This "quality" and sound might not be for everyone, but it's really for those that appreciate tape a little too much! Flamenco fusion or fission? Tú decides. • 25 flamenco guitar loops.         _fake diamonds turns 898 modular synth drum samples into 13 Ableton Drum Racks that are ready to drum design and play with.


        Spencer Carson, our friend from Vancouver, sound designer and composer, was a huge part of this carbon-based collaboration, and supplied us with 898 drum and percussion samples, all hand made in his shiny sonic modular laboratory. We took the sweet sonorous gems Spencer cut for us and created a 13 module Ableton Drum system (Lite, Intro, Standard, or Suite) that allows anyone to make authentic feeling modular drum sounds and beats with ease.


        Each module gives you one drum part, such as a kick, snare, hi-hat, or tom, and each module offers the charm and sonic variety that your DAW doesn't. The macro controls for each of the 13 modules are tailored to the samples they hold, and you can get tasteful and effortless changes for each sound quickly and easily. Load up one or a bunch of modules in your sessions, and you’re good to go!

        • Use your MIDI note lengths to drive the samples from short to long like a gate length on an old school sequencer.

        • Use the release controls to tidy up the tails in re-trigger/ratchet mode.

        • Use and automate the easy re-trigger functions to ratchet each hit as you see fit.

        • Many modules include multiple sampled variations of the same sound, so you’ll never get the exact hit or sound every time you hit play.

        • Pitched drum modules contain up to 88 individually sampled pitches for total authenticity.

        Spencer went beyond the usual synth-born drum pieces like kicks, snares and hi-hats, and gave us multiple 88 key pitched drums and percussion sounds as well. All of these drum sounds evoke a vintage vantage, and bring you an aural aura of authenticity. We wanted it to sound like a super-polished modular drum session would, with many of the same sorts of controls made into Ableton macros that spark a different kind of DAW free creativity and approach to composition that's focused on programming as well as performing. We wanted to bring the feeling of modular drums without the fuss, and offer a simple and fast way to get cool sounding drums.
